Musical Journey to the North and the South

Stefan Kagl was born in Munich in 1963. He began his organ studies with private teachers, including Peter Schammberger, and continued at the State University of Music in Munich in the organ class of Professor Klemens Schnorr. He furthered his studies at the Schola Cantorum and the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris (CNR), studying with Jean Langlais and his wife Marie-Louise.

Kagl holds numerous prestigious qualifications: the “A” diploma in church music, the “Künstlerisches Staatsdiplom Hauptfach Orgel” in Munich, as well as the Prix de Virtuosité (with distinction), Premier Prix d’Orgue, and Prix d’Excellence from Paris.

In 1991, he won first prize at the International César Franck Competition in Haarlem, the Netherlands, which marked the beginning of an active international career as a concert organist. He has premiered several works by his teacher Jean Langlais and recorded CDs for labels such as Motette (featuring works by Charles Tournemire and Jean Langlais) and cpo (the complete organ works of John Ireland). Most recently, he released Russian Dreams in Switzerland, featuring organ transcriptions of Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

In addition to his performance career, Kagl served as organist and music director in Bad Kissingen (1991–1996), and later at the two main churches in Rudolstadt (1997–2002). He is also a prolific writer and speaker, contributing articles, lectures, and radio features on Jean Langlais and French organ music.

Currently, Stefan Kagl is the organist and music director at Herford Minster, artistic director of the Herforder Orgelsommer festival, and teaches organ and improvisation at the University of Church Music in Herford.
