Cantores Islandiae perform Vespers from the Office of St. Thorlak in Hallgrímskirkja on Monday, December 22 at 5:00 p.m.
The Office of St. Thorlak is a liturgical service sung in honor of St. Thorlak Þórhallsson, bishop of Skálholt in the 12th century. He passed away on St. Thorlak’s Day in 1193, and it was not long before he was canonized—the first Icelander to be declared a saint. The Office of St. Thorlak has been preserved in a manuscript dating from around 1400 and is a unique part of Iceland’s cultural heritage, bearing witness to the reverence and importance St. Thorlak held in the Catholic era. Conductor is Ágúst Ingi Ágústsson and organist is Björn Steinar Sólbergsson.
