Siggi String Quartet – Seven Words of Christ on the Cross

On Palm Sunday, March 29th at 5:00 PM, the Siggi String Quartet will perform Joseph Haydn's moving work, The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross, in Hallgrímskirkja. The work was composed in 1786 for the celebration of Good Friday in Cádiz, Spain, and is one of the deepest and most meditative works of musical literature.
Haydn later composed a version for string quartet (Op. 51), which is most often performed today. The work consists of an introduction, seven slow "sonatas" based on the last words of Christ.
The Siggi String Quartet was founded in 2012 and is among the country's leading chamber groups. The quartet has premiered numerous new works, worked closely with Icelandic and international composers, and regularly performed at major music festivals in the Nordic countries.
