The organ
Concert organ
The arrival of the Klais organ in 1992 marked a turning point in the church's musical life, allowing it to offer world-class organ concerts.
The concert organ in the west gable of Hallgrímskirkja is the largest organ in Iceland and is sought after by organists from all over the world to play and record in the church. It was inaugurated in December 1992, built by the Johannes Klais organ workshop in Bonn, Germany. The organ has 4 keyboards and a footstool, 72 stops and 5275 pipes. The organ is 15 meters high, weighs about 25 tons and the largest pipes are about 10 meters high. The purchase of the organ was largely financed by donations. People were invited to buy the pipes and gift certificates can still be purchased in the church shop that certify that the person in question is the owner of a particular pipe.
The Klaisorgan is used in church services and has also been widely recognized as an excellent concert instrument. The advent of the portable organ stand has significantly increased the organ's potential for use, both in concerts and ceremonies. It is also by far the largest organ in Iceland and is renowned among organists around the world for its quality, diverse range of voices and how well it fits into the church space.
