Servants of the Mass
Live participation
Many people volunteer their time at Hallgrímskirkja. The mass servers are one such group that actively participates in the celebration.
The role of mass servers
Mass servers are volunteers who help make Mass enjoyable and festive. Their main role is to:
- receive and welcome people
- read Bible text
- distribution in the altar aisle
Participating in a mass group is a team building activity that gives a lot and shouldn't be burdensome. Sigrún Valgeirsdóttir, an experienced mass server, says:
"I think it's wonderful to be actively involved in the work, to be with a group of good people who want to make an effort to make the Mass good and festive. There is teamwork in this work, a lot is put into it. It is important that those who want to be active in the church have the opportunity to do so. One of the things we mass ministers do is to warmly welcome people. When people come to church, they should feel welcome."
