Hallgrímur's Christmas
The exhibition "Hallgrímskirkja's Christmas" has been in Hallgrímskirkja for the past nine years, and now for the tenth time, Hallgrímskirkja invites preschool and primary school children in Reykjavík and the surrounding area to visit Hallgrímskirkja on the eve of Christmas. The exhibition is based on the book of the same name by Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir.
The visit includes a tour of the church and a talk about the churches. The children are given a short retelling of the book Hallgrímur's Christmas, which tells the story of Hallgrímur Pétursson's preparations for Christmas when he was a young boy and what Christmas was like 400 years ago in Iceland. The project has been well received and has received positive feedback.
A bathroom will be set up for the show. Where it will be possible to visit Christmases of the past. In the bathroom you can find items discussed in the book and actors Níels Thibaud Girerd and Pálmi Freyr Hauksson conjure up a Christmas atmosphere that refers to the story.
Children aged 3 to 10 are invited to come on a school or group visit. Groups can book a visit closer to the exhibition by sending an email to Hallgrímskirkja at vidburdir@hallgrimskirkja.is
Admission is free.
Groups will be welcomed on weekdays in December. Each visit takes approximately 40 minutes.
Although much has changed in four centuries, there are many familiar things about the Christmas preparations of the household in Gröf á Höfðastrond, where Hallgrímur lived. Then, as now, light is kindled in the hearts of the people, even though darkness looms over them.
