Anok is a brand new work by Högni Egilsson composed for Cantoque Ensemble, organ, cello, percussion and soloist.

ANOK is the Coptic word for I—the same word that underlies the Hebrew word ānōkī in “I am the Lord your God.”

The work takes its text from an ancient poem found at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt in 1945, copied in the fourth century. There is no narrative and no single image that holds together. Only voice.

She speaks in contrasts: she is the first and the last, the honored and the despised, mother and daughter. She takes each name and rejects it at the same time. With each sentence, the self becomes both clearer and more nebulous.

It all begins with one word: me, but each time I open a new crack, the voice moves closer and further away at the same time, until all that remains is a mystery that echoes.

ANOK is a new composition by Högni Egilsson for Cantoque Ensemble, organ, cello, percussion, and soloists.

ANOK means “I.”

A voice appears. It names itself, breaks apart, returns as something else. First and last. Honored and despised. Mother and daughter.

Drawn from an ancient text discovered at Nag Hammadi, ANOK moves through repetition, rupture, breath, and resonance — the self not as something whole, but something unstable, split open, and constantly becoming.
