In 2014, on the 400th anniversary of Hallgrímur Pétursson’s birth, the idea arose to create a service using liturgical texts from Guðbrandur’s Graduale, centred on a verse from Hallgrímur Pétursson’s Andleg keðja (Spiritual Chain). Andleg keðja is a collection of verses based on the texts of the First Lectionary Series of the church year, with one verse for each holy day of the year.

The idea became a reality, and the Hallgrímur Mass was first sung on the first Sunday of October 2014 at Breiðholtskirkja.

The Mass is entirely sung.

No instruments are used during the service.

The Breiðholtskirkja Choir has performed the Mass under the direction of Örn Magnússon. Since Örn has left his position at Breiðholtskirkja and the choir is no longer affiliated with the church, it has taken the name Kammerkórinn AMICI, reflecting the close friendship that characterises the group.

The Hallgrímur Mass has been sung at Breiðholtskirkja every year since 2014, and in recent years the choir has also been invited to perform the Mass at Hallgrímskirkja.

This year, the medieval vocal ensemble Cantores Islandiae joins the performance. The ensemble is now based at Hallgrímskirkja.

Before the service, Örn Magnússon will give a short introduction to the Hallgrímur Mass in the north hall of Hallgrímskirkja, starting at 19:00.

Evening mass with old liturgy from the time of Hallgrímur Pétursson at Hallgrímskirkja.
